Mammogram Redux
Mar. 18th, 2010 03:12 pmI had my very first mammogram yesterday and it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. I went to the St Francis Breast Center (on the South Side of Indianapolis) and they were great. The tech explained everything she was doing (and why) and took the time to answer all my questions.
Today, less than 24 hours after the test, I got a call that I need to come back. Seems the Radiologist is seeing something in my left breast that she wants a better look at. Since this is my first mammogram they have no films to compare to so they don't know if the something is just my normal breast tissue or if is really "something". So I get to go back tomorrow afternoon to have a more extensive diagnostic mammogram. Basically they are going to take more pictures so they have more than just the standard two views done in a normal screening. The Radiologist will look at them right then and there so I know before I leave if I need more tests (ultrasound or biopsy) or if I'm good for another 6-months to a year.
I will admit that yes, I'm a wee bit freaked out. The tech told me yesterday that it isn't unusual to be called back for more pictures with your first mammogram and that most of the time nothing is wrong. I'm hoping I just have a weird boob. Thank goodness I get the results right then and there tomorrow. I don't think I'd do very well waiting over the weekend!
Stressful day at work and this isn't helping. I'm going to the gym soon to work off some of my nervous energy. Wish me luck!
