I'm cooking on Thursday for Thanksgiving. I'm not having anyone over, friends or family, so it will be just me. Before everyone starts into the "oh, so sad" shit let me just say that I like it this way. Turkey Day isn't much of a holiday for me, never really has been. Just a day to eat, really. I got used to not doing the big family get-together stuff when I worked retail as Thanksgiving day was the only day I had off that particular week and I didn't want to spend it having to be social. I am not a social creature, by any means, and being around people tends to leave me kind of drained (parents and Sissy excluded, of course). And no one in my immediate family likes to travel at the holidays. I don't have any vacation days left this year, flying this week is like the ninth circle of hell, and driving is iffy with the weather. Mom & Dad stay in Texas while Sissy and J- stay in North Carolina. Plus with J-'s hip a trip up to Indiana is out of the question.
Growing up we didn't always have Turkey. Sicilian meatloaf. Cornish Game Hens. Steak and Kidney Pie. Thanksgiving kind of became more of a day to experiment or try something new. These days I see the 4-day Thanksgiving weekend as time to catch up on movies, read some books, clean the house, maybe rake the leaves, and cook. Yes, it may be just me but I do cook on Turkey Day. I used to hate to cook but these days I actually enjoy it. Maybe because I actually have a decent kitchen now. I've always been able to cook and other than a few *ahem* misfires *cough* *cough* I tend to be a very good cook. I figure the worst that can happen is it turns out inedible, gets thrown away and I order pizza instead. No biggie.
So for Turkey Day this year I'm having turkey! Kin of unusual since I don't eat much meat and hate to fix it. But I've found I can do a turkey breast without gagging. Here's the menu:
Cranberry-Orange Turkey Breast
Roasted Vegetables
Dinner Rolls
Pumpkin Pie
The turkey is easy as I do it in the slow cooker. The veggies will include zucchini, yellow squash, three kinds of bell peppers (yellow, orange and red), and red potatoes. The dinner rolls and pie are pre-made so all I have to do is heat them up. I like to cook but I decided I wasn't in the mood to do the bread and pie from scratch so I'm slacking. Bet it will still be yummy!
So that's the scoop. I will post after the dinner to let everyone know how it turned out.
